Nodding, I threw my head back as his tongue traced around my clit. I cried out as he sucked the sweet bud into his mouth and nibbled on it. My legs wrapped around his head while my fingers plunged through his hair. He sucked and licked my clit as liquid gushed between my legs and my head thrashed back and forth on the silk sheets as he feasted on me.

A wave of heat spread through my body, chasing away all the memories of Diego’s words as Damon’s tongue plunged deep into my pussy. He licked the inside of me, drinking up my juices as I shivered under him. His finger replaced his tongue and he thrust deep inside as he sucked my clit back into his mouth. The heat grew to an inferno, and I cried out as I struggled for that release.

Damon sank a second finger into me, wetting it before he added a third and then a fourth. His thumb played with my clit as his fingers filled me and thrust deep inside. Then his fingers hit that sweet spot inside of me and I blazed like the sun, my orgasm wrenching a scream from my lips.

As I came down from my orgasm, I felt Damon remove his fingers, slowly as my eyes rolled into the back of my head. I gasped with each movement and then he placed a kiss to my pussy that sent me rolling over that edge again.

Even before I was finished climaxing, Damon was buried to the hilt inside me, my pussy clenching around his shaft as I came. He pulled out with excruciating slowness and then slammed back into me. He slammed harder with each thrust as his fingers bit into my hips and moved me to match his thrusts. I was breathless as fireworks flashed in my vision and I screamed over and over again as I rode each orgasm he was creating in me.

Then he growled, “Fuck, Mia, take me all!” And his cum filled my pussy as he continued to thrust, harder and harder and I tumbled into my final orgasm.

After that amazing lovemaking session, I laid in his arms and stared out the window at the darkening ocean. I was completely spent and all of the cold was out of my body...although, now that I wasn’t making love to Damon, the fear was slowly returning.

Damon didn’t say anything after we’d made love—instead, he had pulled me against him and spooned me as we’d fallen into a peaceful slumber. Now, I sensed that he was awake, but he still wasn’t speaking and I knew he was trying to figure out my behavior today.

Instead of making him ask, I sighed and said, “I need to tell you something, but I am scared to.”

I felt his body stiffen and squeezed my eyes shut, “Someone came to visit me today and he said he knew you from when you and him used to run together. You have never mentioned him before, but the guy was terrifying. He had this scar on his face that twisted his mouth into a grim smile.” I shuddered as Diego’s face sprung to mind. The guy was a cold-blooded murderer, that much was clear.

“Diego,” he said and it wasn’t a question...he’d known exactly who I was speaking of.

I nodded and then said, “Yes, he is a terrifying man.”

“I know,” he tightened his arms around me and buried his head into my hair. “I’m so sorry that he approached you. I shouldn’t have let you out of my sight after everything that has happened. I just thought that the gang was finished with us...after...”

I sighed as I felt tears pricking my eyes. “I don’t think they will ever be done with us. I think this is the life we have chosen to live.”

“I am so sorry, Mia. I wish that I could give you a different life,” I heard the regret in his tone and I turned in his arms.

“Don’t,” I said. “Don’t ever tell me how much you regret the things between us. If life was easy, it would be boring, and I know that we can figure this out between us.” I kissed his lips and felt his body react to mine. I loved that he felt this way for me, and I loved how my own body reacted to his. It was like I needed him to breathe.

“But I have brought us more than a little hardship, you have almost died and now...” his voice trailed off.

“Now, I am in your arms,” I whispered. “He didn’t hurt me,” I assured him.

He ran his hands through my hair and nodded, “I would have killed him if he had. What did he want?”

I bit my lip as I tried to figure out how to tell him. “He wants the files that you have on him. I assume the original as well as any copies that you have. He said that it is an axe above his head and he isn’t waiting for it to fall.”

Damon’s jaw tightened and I saw a small tick on the side of his eye. “And if I don’t give him the files?”

I shuddered and fresh tears stung my eyes. “He said that he would keep an axe above my head.” I swallowed back my fear. “He is giving you until Friday and then he said he would be coming to visit me.”

Damon’s eyes went dark with anger. “I see,” he said and his tone was filled with a deadly quiet that I hadn’t heard before. This man in my arms was Damon the killer, not Damon the lover. Strangely enough, I felt no fear for this man and I knew that he would protect me just as much, if not more, than when he was just regular old Damon. “Did he tell you how I was supposed to get these files to him?”

I shook my head. “He just said that he would be seeing you on Friday, so I assume he would be contacting you. And...” I paused and swallowed, “If he didn’t see you, he would be seeing me later on Friday night.”

Damon’s eyes turned as hard as steel and he said, “Then I guess I have no choice but to give him the files. What files does he want exactly?”

“Just any with his name on it. He said he doesn’t care about any of the other people you have dirt on and you can keep those.” I sighed and then allowed a sob to be wrenched from my throat. “I am so sorry that I am a weakness for you. All of the gang could come and strip away your security, one piece at a time, until they will kill you.”

Damon pulled me against him, his mouth fluttering over my eyelids before he kissed my forehead again. “Don’t ever think that you are my weakness,” he shook me gently. “You are my strength and the reason why I wake up in the morning.”

  “But...”

“No buts,” he interrupted me. “Diego is just one man and I have no problem giving up all my information to keep you safe. I know him and I know that once he has that information in his hands, he will leave you alone. It will take me a few days to get it all, but I will have it in time and then we can focus on our future.”

He took a breath and it felt like a steadying breath to me. “I thought we could stay here in Florida, but I think we need to look at moving again. I am sorry, Mia.”

I shook my head. “You don’t have to apologize. I will go anywhere with you.”

And then I kissed him and we forgot all about his past and the impending date with Diego as we made love once more.

  Chapter Eight

When the ringing of the doorbell made me jump, I realized that my nerves were shot after spending the last three days waiting for Friday. It was here and Damon still hadn’t heard from Diego. Unfortunately, I had heard from him every day through a package he would leave for me.

On the first morning, I had come out onto the patio and found a brilliant arrangement of fall mums on the patio table. A card was placed in the arrangement with the words, “Thinking of you and hope you shared our meeting,” written on it. I had thrown the mums out immediately, but Damon had found them.

At that point, I wasn’t allowed outside alone and had to be with either him or Jake. The second morning had been a teddy bear on the doorstep with another note that warned about Friday. Damon had taken it to work and thrown it into the dumpster there. He didn’t want to take a chance of there being something inside the stuffed bear, and I didn’t want the pink and happy stuffed animal in my house.

Jake, Damon, and I had argued that day about me going somewhere safe. I refused to be separated from Damon, but my nerves were on edge twenty-four hours a day. I hadn’t even slept for fear that Diego would just decide to drop the axe he was yielding...and I figured he meant literally. Damon had given me a pistol, and Jake had taken me to the shooting range to practice.

  Every minu
te of the last three days, I had been on edge as I tried to settle into a routine, but the fact that danger was invading our home was making me jump at every shadow. I was tired of it and just wanted it to end.

Damon had secured the files, and I stared at them. A part of me wanted to know what was in those files, but another part of me was scared to see them. What if Diego found out that I had looked at them? Would he kill me because I was a risk to his sense of security?

As I listened to Damon opening the door, I ran my fingers over the thick manila envelope. It was tempting, but I ignored the temptation and instead, waited for the all clear that everything was safe at the door. He didn’t let me open the door and I had to stay away from the windows.

All wedding plans had been put on hold and the only thing I could do was phone the various caterers and vendors to make sure that everything was moving ahead as planned. It was not a great way to plan a wedding.

Damon walked into the kitchen with a long floral box and I held my breath as he set it carefully on the table and opened it. A dozen red roses sat in the box with a card on top of them. Damon carefully opened it as Jake walked into the kitchen. “Another gift?” he asked.

I nodded, unable to say anything with my heart in my throat. Damon picked up the card and read it, “To my beautiful sweetheart, Mia. Congratulations on your engagement. I hope to see your fiancé on Friday at the docks where he last saw Hank, eight o’clock in the evening. Best regards, Diego.”

“So what are we going to do?” Jake asked when Damon crumpled the card and tossed it into the box of roses. The cloying scent of the flowers made my stomach roll and I felt like throwing up my breakfast. I pressed my hands to my stomach and knew that my nausea was more than just nerves. I was late for my period and the pregnancy test had confirmed that I was pregnant.

I hadn’t told Damon yet because I knew he would go crazy with worry. “It means that I am going to meet Diego with the file and we are going to be done with this,” he said as he glanced at me.

“You aren’t going alone,” I said as fear laced my words. It could be a trap for Damon to get himself killed.

“Mia,” he growled a warning and I knew it would be a hard fight to get him to take me with him. I opened my mouth to argue as he said, “I’m going alone and you are going to stay here.”

“I could come with you,” Jake interrupted the argument that was about to brew between us. “Mia could stay here locked up tight and you could meet Diego. If we go a few hours early, we could scope out the location and I could stay in a spot where I could react if he tried anything.”

Damon shook his head. “What if he is scoping the place out before us?”

“I doubt he would do that, but he didn’t say he expected you to go alone. I could just show up with you,” Jake added and I nodded. I didn’t want Damon to go alone and I knew that his best bet would be to have Jake with him.

Shaking his head, Damon covered the flowers and carried them out to the deck. Stepping down onto the sand, he walked over to the fire pit and placed the roses into it before he built a fire up and burned the flowers. I watched as he struggled with his thoughts and finally said, “Okay, Jake, you can come. Mia, you are going to lock yourself into our room and not leave until I come back.”

Jake and I nodded and said nothing as we watched the roses burn. The cloying smell of them filled the air and I retreated back into the house as Damon and Jake continued to watch. I could hear them talking through the opened door, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. All I knew is that they would be leaving together and I would be alone.

Fear pulled at me, but I pushed it down. Damon was the one in danger, and now Jake would be in danger with him. I wanted to be with them so that we could face the danger together, but there was no way that would happen. Both Jake and Damon would fight me on it and they may even tie me up to keep me put.

Besides, I had to think about the baby growing in my stomach. I touched my belly again as I tapped the file and looked out towards the beach. I needed to be safe so the baby was safe, but I wouldn’t be unarmed. I would make sure the nine millimeter was safely tucked beside me on the bed as I waited for them tonight.

  Chapter Nine

A flash of lightning spread through the sky and cast the bedroom in an eerie light as I watched the storm swept ocean. The weather was rather violent tonight and I couldn’t help but fear for the worst. Surely, this wasn’t an omen of what was happening to Damon and Jake right now.

They’d been gone for over two hours and eight o’clock had slid past without a phone call from them. Before they had left, Damon and I had made sweet love and I had ached with the secret I was keeping from him. When it was time for them to go, Damon had kissed me deeply and told me to be safe.

He’d locked all the doors and set the security system before he’d given me one final kiss, told me he loved me, and walked out the door with Jake. I had stood at the locked door, staring out the window beside it as I watched his car roll off down the street. Tears had streaked my vision as the first rumblings of an autumn storm could be heard in the distance.

And then the storm had started and it played havoc with my imagination. I could see Damon lying in the rain-drenched parking lot, his lifeblood flowing from him as Jake screamed for help—his cries drowned out by the sound of the storm around them. I had tried everything to calm down, but nothing worked and I’d almost raced out of the house to follow them.

I knew where they were meeting and how long it would take to get home, but the meeting had been an hour ago and they still hadn’t called. Even a quick phone call to tell me that they were okay would be enough to set me at ease.

The sound of something breaking drew my head up, and I stood up and walked to my bedroom door. I glanced down the hallway and didn’t notice anything, but I stood and waited. The minutes ticked by as several more lightning flashes filled the sky followed by the ominous sound of thunder. Nothing moved in the house, and I realized that it must just be my imagination.

Jumping, I gave a short scream as the phone chimed on the bed. Racing over to it, I picked it up and saw Damon’s number flashing on the screen. “Hello,” I said after I punched the button.

“Get out of the house now!” Damon screamed.

“What?” I asked as my heart leapt into my throat.

“Get out of the house! He didn’t show. He sent some amateur to kill me while he finished you off. I managed to question the thug before I beat him senseless.” His words were said quickly and it sounded like he was speeding down the road as he talked. “I am on my way home right, now but you need to get out of the house before he gets there!”

“Damon,” I began and then the words died in my throat as I turned around and found Diego leaning against the doorframe, a large axe in one hand and a pistol in the other pointed at me. “It’s too late,” I whispered in defeat as my hand went protectively across my stomach.

“What? Mia!” Damon screamed. “I am on my way! Stall him, and I will save you, I promise.”

Tears stung my eyes and Diego cocked his head to the side, “Tell lover boy that you have to go. You have a date with an axe drop,” he said coldly and his black eyes shone in the lightning.

Terror filled me and I wanted to run, but I didn’t know which way to go. I glanced at the bathroom and knew that it was a dead end. Even if I made it, he would have the door opened in seconds and I would be trapped. The doorway to the rest of the house was just as dangerous as I would have to get past Diego and I wasn’t sure where I would go from there.

The only other option was the patio doors leading onto the deck from the master and out onto the beach...but was that a safe option. While I was a jogger, Diego was in top shape himself and I was positive that he would catch up to me quickly. Out on the beach, Damon wouldn’t be able to find me and it would give Diego time alone with me.

Seeing the hopelessness of it all, I said, “Damon, it’s too late.” A sob was wrenched free from my chest as I continued,
I love you, Damon, and I will love you forever.”

Damon screamed, “Don’t hang up. Stay with me, Mia. Don’t let that bastard near you.” I heard him swearing and then he said, “I am almost home, ten minutes, Mia...that’s all I need.”

I clicked off on the phone and stared at Diego as he stood watching me like a spider with an insect in its web. “Why?” I asked. “You promised that you would leave us alone if you got your file.”

He shrugged his shoulder. “I lied.”

Tears slid down my cheeks. “Why would you lie?”

He took a step towards me, and I took a step back towards the head of the bed. I glanced over at the pillow and remembered that the Glock was under it. All I had to do was keep him talking and out of reach until I could dive for the gun. “I never lied,” he said, a grin spreading across his lips. “I said that I would leave you two to your happy life unless I was given a contract with your name on it. What I didn’t say was that I already had that contract. The gang wanted both you and Damon dead and I picked up the contract.”

Scratching his chin with the butt of the axe, he continued, “I was going to just do the hit and deal with the repercussions, but then I realized that I wanted to get that file back. I mean, why should I ruin my life because I wasn’t thorough?”

“Then why did you not ask for all of the files. You could have gotten everything on the gang and either used it for your own purpose or given it back to the gang.” I said as I took another step back. All I needed was time and Diego seemed to enjoy talking.

“You know, I didn’t think of that. But I did think of how I could go up in the organization. Without a lot of the guys fingered in Damon’s files, the gang would need someone to take control. I could be that someone. Really, it was a win win for me if Damon’s file was exposed...but only if the evidence he had on me was destroyed.”
