  Chapter One

“Wake up, sweetheart.” The whisper against my skin caused me to shift and my eyelids fluttered at the sound. I was awake, but I didn’t want to wake up yet. Waking up meant dealing with a thousand obstacles, and number one was phoning my mom to tell her I was engaged.

Engaged! I cracked my eyes open a slit and stared at the beautiful face of my handsome fiancé. He was busy looking at my naked breasts, which he had uncovered when he had slipped the sheet down, and didn’t notice me staring at him. I couldn’t believe how much I loved him and to think, I had almost lost him so many times.

I squeezed my eyes shut and took a deep breath, which, I’m sure caused my chest to swell...much to his delight judging from the hardness of his shaft against my hip. Groaning, I stretched as a soft smile played on my lips. “You are not playing fair,” Damon groaned, and he pushed against me again with his hips.

“Then maybe you should punish me for being naughty,” I laughed and then gasped as his hand slid between my legs. He caressed the soft mound before he slipped a finger between the wet folds. His thumb flicked across my clit and caused me to shudder.

“Hmmm...That sounds like a wonderful plan,” Damon said as he gave me a wicked grin. I knew I was in trouble and he would not let me leave this bed until I had screamed for release.

Damon leaned forward, his mouth caressing my ear as he said, “I’m going to fuck you so hard that you will be screaming for more and then I am going to give it to you.”

I shivered under him and groaned when his lips traced a fiery trail down my neck. My arms wrapped around his head as he burrowed between my breasts kissed the sensitive skin between them. He kissed along the curve of my breast and then nipped at the delicate flesh. I arched my back, savoring the sweet torment Damon could give to my body.

His teeth raked my nipple and I sucked in a breath to still the pulsing need inside of me. “Make love to me Damon,” I whispered.

He shook his head. “Not until you learn not to tease your fiancé.”

I cried out as he bit my nipple again before he laved it with his tongue. I moved my hips, begging for release, but he ignored the spot between my legs that was aching for his touch. Instead, he licked and bit at my nipples until the rosy beads were red from his treatment. My orgasm tortured me as much as Damon was with his kisses to my breast—it hovered just out of reach, the colors shifting in my vision as I fought to reach it.

Damon was relentless as he ravaged my body. His caresses were just enough to drive me wild, but they never drove me over the edge I was so desperately reaching for. His hands slid across my stomach and I screamed in frustration as he feathered my mound but then his fingers caressed my thigh instead of where I really needed him.

“What is it, beauty?” he whispered against my heated skin. “What do you need?”

I squirmed under him in an effort to find that release, but it stayed out of reach, “I need you...” my voice broke as I moaned when he licked my nipple, “I need you inside of me.”

He smiled a wicked grin and then moved between my legs. His cock pressed against my opening, but he didn’t push inside of me. I thrashed under him and then reached for his hips. He grinned at my efforts to pull him close. “Ask nicely,” Damon growled.

I shook my head and slid my hand between us. He captured my wrist and secured both my hands above my neck. “Ask,” he demanded.

Shaking with need, I blushed and said, “Please, Damon. I need you so much. Make love to me...please!”

I screamed as his cock slammed deep inside of me. My pussy tightened around his shaft, and I shuddered with each thrust that he made. My body shook with desire, and I opened my mouth to scream my ecstasy, but nothing came out. Instead, I stretched and writhed under him. His long strokes caused my insides to ripple and shiver as the orgasm built inside me. I felt it growing, the coil wrapping tighter, my body felt like it was on fire and then he slammed into me again and I heard him cry out as his cum exploded deep inside of me.

The feeling of him coming was all I needed to send me over the edge and my orgasm ripped through my body, making me dizzy from the pure ecstasy of the moment. I was only slightly aware of him dropping to the side of the bed and pulling out of me. I was barely conscious when he wrapped me up in his arms and spooned against me.

After several minutes, I finally came down from my high and sighed. He chuckled as he felt my body soften from pure satisfaction. “That was amazing,” I murmured as I kissed his arm.

“You keep telling me that,” he laughed.

I punched his arm, and he laughed harder. “Don’t let your ego get inflated.” I laughed and kissed the place where I had hit him. “I guess we should get ready, huh?” I said and a tremor of fear coursed over me.

Today was going to be a blur, and I wasn’t looking forward to it. Sometime last night, Damon had contacted the police to tell them that I was home safe. He’d asked them to wait until the morning and told them he would bring me down when we got up. Already, we were running late; I also wanted to go and see Jake in the hospital.

Fresh tears pricked my eyes, and I found myself sobbing in Damon’s arms as he quietly comforted me. He knew how torn I was. Yes, all my dreams were coming true—I was engaged to the man I loved, but I wasn’t sure if we would have our happily ever after.

I shook as the events from the previous day filled my mind again. It had started like any other day. Just at work with Jake making me laugh as we prepped the bar for the night. Then a group of men came in and attacked me. A firefight had ensued when Jake had walked into the mess and he’d been shot. Thankfully, Jake hadn’t been killed. I don’t know what I would have done if he had.

Once Jake had been shot, one of the men had kidnapped me and then held me as bait for Damon. Thankfully, Damon had saved me and cleaned up the evidence that I had been in that shed by the ocean. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pretend that I had been kidnapped...there was too much of a mess to just push it under the carpet.

We’d spent most of the night, in between making love and Damon proposing to me, planning what we would say about my abduction. One thing was very clear: we had to keep Damon out of it and we had to keep me as far from that shed as possible. What was decided is that my abductor had taken me as a hostage, but when he realized that he had gotten away, he dropped me off in the middle of nowhere. I had walked in shock for hours until I realized that I still had my purse and cell phone on me. Still in shock, I had phoned my fiancé instead of the police.

It was weak, but it was really all that we could say. As Damon said, “If the police started poking holes into it, we would leave...and never look back.” Damon knew how to disappear, and we had the money to do it.

I sighed as the last of my tears flowed down my cheeks. I knew I was still shell shocked by everything that had happened to me and I had a lot of doubts. I didn’t know if Damon’s gang would ever leave us alone. I had doubts that they would.

Rising up, I gave Damon a kiss and then stood. “I’m going to have a shower and get ready,” I said.

He looked at me in concern. As much as Damon wanted to, this was something that he couldn’t help me with. Just being by me was enough to comfort me, but there was really nothing that he could do to make the world right. I was sure, if I asked, he would kill every last man that threatened our happiness from his old gang...but really, that would destroy him and I could never ask that of him. He’d killed enough people to protect me and, now, his friends were killing people to keep me safe.

Fresh tears brimmed my eyes as I wondered about what to do with all of this information. How could we keep living this life like we were? It might tear us apart in the long run. Damon continued to watch me and then he said, “Mia, do you want me to shower with you?”

I smiled a tear edged smile and answered, “No, I need to focus on keeping the story straight in my head.”

Turning away from the bed, I headed towards the bathroom and closed the door behind me. I turned on the shower and stood under the spray—tears running down my face as I cried out all the pain and fear that had been touching me since yesterday.

  Chapter Two

The hours at the police station had been exhausting. For their part, the police weren’t really looking at me or Damon. Jake had been alert enough to tell the police that the armed men were old friends from his days in a gang in his youth.

As far as the police were concerned, the six men had found out that Jake had returned from his tour of duties and discovered where he was working. Once they had tracked him down, the group had come into the bar to kill Jake. He had been able to fight them off. Three of the men had died, the other two had survived, but were not talking. They were under police custody at the hospital as they recovered. Hank’s body had been found this morning. but the police believed he was hit for failing to kill Jake.

To the police, I was just a waitress caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was pure luck that the surveillance footage at the bar didn’t have audio and it just looked like Hank was questioning me about Jake. They didn’t even bother to look at Damon, but then, why would they. Damon was using an alias while we lived in Florida.

Still, despite having figured it all out, the police had kept Damon and me at the police station for about eight hours as they went through the various points of my statement. They even questioned us separately. Me about my time from the attempted assassination until Damon came and found me. Damon about when he got the call and why he didn’t phone the police.

I still wasn’t convinced that they bought my story, but we would see. After the excruciating hours being interrogated, I was released to the hospital where I had to go through several routine tests to document the wounds I had suffered during the kidnapping...or hostage taking as they were now calling it. For the most part, outside of a few bruises on my arms, I was relatively unscathed. I don’t think that would have happened if it hadn’t been for Jake. If I’d been alone with all six of those men, I think they might have raped me.

The thought sent tremors through my body and I noticed that my hands were shaking again. As much as I had to look forward to with Damon, including planning my wedding, my body was still reacting to the shock of being taken by Hank. I jumped at every noise as I waited to be admitted to Jake’s room.

Damon noticed my hands shaking and reached for them. He leaned over, planted a kiss to my ear, and whispered, “It’s going to be okay. You’re safe now, Mia.”

I nodded, “I know, but it’s going to take a little time.”

I leaned against him as we waited as the police cleared us as visitors. While it looked like Jake would be cleared of any charges—it was self-defense, after all, he was still under police custody while they continued to investigate the attack. Of course, part of the police custody meant that he was under police protection in case someone else tried to kill him.

Maybe that was why I was shivering. I expected, at any moment, that another bad guy would come around the corner, guns blazing, as he mowed Damon and me down. I didn’t think I could deal with another attempt on Damon’s life...it was just too hard.

Damon gave me a reassuring smile as the doctor came over and said, “You can see Mr. Hunter now.” We nodded and stood up to follow the polite, middle-aged man to the room. I glanced at the police officer standing at the door as he gave me a sidelong glance.

We were closing the door behind us when I caught the first look at Jake since I saw him writhing on the floor shot. He looked horrible. His normally healthy skin was fallow in coloring and he had dark eyes, almost like they were bruised. The wires and machines he was hooked up to hummed quietly in the room, but they felt deafening to me.

His eyes were closed, long lashes leaving a shadow on his face from the light above him. The curtains were closed to the evening sky and he was completely motionless. The only reason that I knew he was alive was the light rise and fall of his chest. “Jake,” I whispered as I drew close to the bed.

Jake groaned and then his eyes opened slowly. He looked groggy and his eyes were definitely unfocused, but when he saw me, a small smile spread across his face. “Mia, you’re safe.”

I nodded, the fresh tears filling my eyes as I gave him a watery smile. “Yes, I’m safe. He let me go.” I winced at the lie, but Damon had stressed that we keep it up from now on. If we believed the story, then it was less likely that we would be found out. His gaze slid over me and he nodded when he seemed content, then his gaze slid past me towards Damon.

“Hi, do I know you?” Jake said, and my mouth dropped. Surely, he hadn’t forgotten Damon. Before I could say anything, Jake chuckled. “You must be the boyfriend.”

I couldn’t help the laughter as I said, “He’s my fiancé.”

“Fiancé, huh,” Jake said. “The drugs they have me must be stronger than I imagined. I didn’t think you would ever get married.” He said it to me, but his eyes were on Damon and I realized that there was some unspoken agreement between them. Maybe it was safer for Jake to pretend to not know Damon. It would prevent a lot of problems for them.

Tears slipped down my cheek and then I was sobbing as I hugged Jake. He hissed at the sudden movement caused by my body landing on him, but I couldn’t stop squeezing him. “I’m so sorry, Jake. I didn’t mean for you to get hurt,” I sobbed even harder than before.

Jake’s hand fell on my hair and he rubbed the back of my head. “Mia, it wasn’t your fault. You had no idea what was going to happen. You were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I know that is what we told the police, but that isn’t the truth and you know it,” I whispered against his chest. I couldn’t keep pretending that everything was okay. “I caused this when I took that job...If...if I hadn’t taken that job, they would never had found me and they would have left town. It is all my fault, I should have listened to Damon.”

Jake stiffened in my arms and he said, “You should never listen to Damon,” and then he began laughing. I pulled away from him confused as I tried to find what was funny about all of this. “If you had listened to Damon, I would have never called you my friend.”

His hand caressed my cheek as his thumb wiped away the tears. “Mia, the world is a violent place,” he said as the laughter slipped from his tone. I gazed into his eyes and they looked haunted. “There are bad men in the world, everywhere, and they will do things that can hurt you...but you should never hide from life. Even if you spent your days in your house and avoided everything, the bad men could have still come to steal everything away from you.”

He laid back and stared at a spot on the hospital wall, but I could tell that his eyes were looking into the past at some horrible memory that he kept. Really, it was the first time I had ever seen the darker edge that rested in his soul. I nodded and took a step back as Damon wrapped his arm around my waist. “Mia, give Jake some space...he was just shot,” he murmured, but I saw the concern in his eyes. He knew something
about Jake’s past that he wasn’t telling me.

Leading me to the chair closest to the couch, he manoeuvred me into the chair. I felt like a puppet, but I also felt completely safe in Damon’s hands. I sat and watched Jake for ten minutes as his brow creased and he continued to stare at that space on the wall. A tear slid down his cheek, but despite wanting to go and comfort him, I just sat and waited.

Finally, he shuddered and Damon said, “Those drugs must be strong, we lost you there for twenty minutes.”

Jake laughed and that darkness disappeared with it. “Yeah, they are pretty powerful. I feel nothing,” he said as he tapped his injured leg. He winced. “Well, almost nothing.”

Damon laughed. “I am sure you will be well quick enough and chasing after all the girls again.”

Jake grinned and shifted slightly on the bed to get comfortable. “Hey man,” he said, holding up his hands in defeat, “Those girls chase after me, I just let them.”

“Sure they do. Mia told me all about you,” Damon grinned, and I found myself laughing with them. Despite them pretending to be strangers, I could see the bond between them. They were close and it did seem like they were brothers.

“Mia! How could you tell your fiancé about my ways!” Jake said in mock horror. “Of course, I wish that I had a few of those girls here to brighten my day.”

“Oh, I am sure they will be in as soon as they can,” I laughed. “You are a hero, after all.”

He grimaced and Damon watched him with concern in his eyes as that shadow passed over Jake’s face for a brief moment. Then he brightened and said, “Yeah, I can play the hero angle.” His grin was filled with wickedness when he added, “I’m sure that will get me a few girls.”

I sighed. “Yes, you will get the girls, for sure.” Then my mood returned to serious. “I owe you my life, Jake. I know that I put you in danger, but if it wasn’t for you being there, I don’t think I would be standing here today. I think they would have killed me...and...” I choked back a sob and glanced at Damon. My heart was breaking, and I knew that if it had been six men against one, Damon would have been dead, as well. “And you saved Damon,” I finally said between sobs.
